Essenism is a first-century Jewish religious movement, which is thought to have originated in the village of Essa or Essaü east of the Jordan River. It was a form of early Christianity characterized by asceticism and communal living. The term is derived from 'Eessen,' a name for the followers of Jesus who lived a communal and ascetic lifestyle in Palestine during the first and second centuries CE.
